How Do You Know When You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Pulled Out?

When your wisdom teeth start to grow in they can cause many different issues, including pain, jaw problems, misaligned teeth, and more. Especially if they become impacted, there’s a good chance you’ll need to get them removed. Following are some signs that signal you should make a wisdom tooth removal consultation.

Pain or Discomfort

One of the biggest signs that your wisdom teeth are growing in is if you experience pain, aches, or discomfort towards the back of your mouth where your wisdom teeth would be growing in. While the pain may not be due to wisdom teeth, it’s always a possibility. Either way, an X-ray will be able to determine the culprit of the pain and if it’s because of the wisdom teeth.

Hard Time Eating

Pain while eating is not uncommon when your wisdom teeth are growing in. It’s possible that food gets stuck between your gums and teeth because of your inflamed wisdom teeth and overcrowding. Chewing may also hurt, as putting pressure on inflamed or erupted teeth is never comfortable.

Sinus Issues

It’s very possible that the roots of wisdom teeth go all the way up to the sinuses, therefore causing sinus issues. When teeth grow in on the upper jaw, they can push against the sinuses, leading to pressure, sinus pain, and congestion. While this is not as common of a side effect, it does happen to some patients who are dealing with wisdom teeth coming in.

Infections or Inflammation

If a wisdom tooth needs to be pulled but isn’t, it can become erupted, leading to a gum infection. An erupted wisdom tooth can also cause inflamed lymph nodes, and consequently, a sore or infected throat.

Bad Breath

Having bad breath you struggle to get rid of is a little known side effect of having wisdom teeth coming in. Even when you’re doing your normal oral hygiene routine including brushing and flossing, impacted wisdom teeth can still be giving you bad breath. When wisdom teeth erupt, bacteria can build up – especially since they’re in such a hard-to-reach place.

You may also be experiencing a bad taste in your mouth that you can’t get rid of, and it will be especially bad if you consume a lot of sugar or already have poor oral health.
