Do You Need to See a Dentist Every 6 Months?
Bi-annual exams give you more than just your average cleaning. Your dentist will be able to clean your teeth much more effectively than you would be able to at home. The plaque and tartar that builds up on your teeth has been linked to diseases such as heart disease; thoroughly cleaning built-on plaque is vital for disease prevention in the long term.
Not seeing your general dentist enough can lead to other issues such as cavities, tooth decay or misalignment, oral cancer, and other preventable dental health concerns. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost half of adults age 30 and over have gum disease; but visiting your dentist twice a year can drastically decrease these odds.
Your dentist will use a special tool that can remove plaque from even the most hard to reach places. These tools are small enough to reach beneath the gumline to remove build-up that you are unable to reach with just a toothbrush or floss.
Your dentist can also assess your current health situation and provide advice or suggestions on how to improve your oral care routine. Having a more effective oral routine at home can aid in preventing cavities.
Will I Receive Dental Sealants?
At your general dentist appointment, you or your child may be advised to get a dental sealant. You will only be advised to receive them if your dentist thinks they will be beneficial or if you’re at risk of developing a cavity. While they’re most common for children to receive, adults can receive them as well. During this procedure, a liquid is applied to the groove of a tooth and hardens with the help of a blue light. Sealants provide an extra layer of protection to the molars and can greatly reduce one’s risk of getting a cavity.
What Happens During a General Exam?
Your exam will start with your dentist performing a visual examination of your teeth, gums, tongue, and overall mouth to determine if there are any glaring issues. They will count your teeth and ensure everything looks as it should. Once a year, you will receive X-rays so they can see your teeth on a different level. X-rays will show your dentist if there are any further issues with your tooth structure, roots, or jawbone. They will also conduct an oral cancer screening.
They will then do a deep clean of your mouth using a small yet effective tool by scraping off any and all plaque and tartar, especially along the gumline. After taking off plaque and flossing, your teeth will be polished using a special gritty paste and professional electric brush.
After or during the appointment, your dentist will recommend better ways to brush or floss as well as dental products to make your routine more effective.
